Meta Ships WhatsApp Business Tools MCP for Claude, Codex, and Cursor

Meta documented WhatsApp Business Tools MCP as a remote Model Context Protocol server that lets validated coding agents manage WhatsApp Business Platform setup—discovering businesses, onboarding and registering phone numbers, managing message templates, configuring webhooks, and sending messages—under OAuth scopes controlled by the signed-in human. Meta’s MCP overview page lists the server beside Meta Social Technologies MCP and names supported clients including Claude Desktop and Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex App and CLI, and Cursor App and CLI.

September 15 coverage from The New Stack describes a gradual beta rollout: a developer connects the MCP, selects which administered businesses the agent may access, and can hand the agent a number and display name so it drives verification OTP entry, template CRUD, webhook setup, and test sends. Meta messaging quoted in that report states that reads run under the user’s viewer context, invocations are logged, and state-changing actions require an authenticated person rather than an app-level credential alone.

Scope and limits

This is a product connector, not an open-source release. Meta’s docs warn that agents act with the granted scopes and can be steered by prompt injection in untrusted tool outputs, recommending least-privilege Read versus Manage scopes and separate apps for experimentation. The Social Technologies MCP remains the broader Graph API and docs helper; WhatsApp Business Tools MCP is the WhatsApp-operations surface. Treat availability as rolling beta per Meta and same-day reporting.
